Feature and Follow Friday is a meme hosted by Alison Can Read and Parajunkee. It’s a blog hop–a way to connect with other bloggers and make new friends. I loved Cry, the Beloved Country by Alan Paton. Actually, I still love it and reread it every few years. My copy has all these angsty comments written in the margins, and it’s fun to see how much I’ve changed over the years (and how much I haven’t, as the case may be). When I was in high school, I had this fascination with the grittier side of humanity, so this story of human nature gone awry really appealed to me. As an adult, I enjoy this story because it is beautiful and tragic, occasionally transcendent, and because the lines that arrested me as a child still have that power now that I am an adult. If you haven’t yet read it, you should.

It’s amazing, but it’s also very disturbing in a ‘race-relations-are-and-were-a-bit-of-an-issue-in-South-Africa’ kind of way… A Passage to India by E. M. Forster is another good one with a similar (ish) theme.
Hey Kelly. You ought to have a widget in the control panel called RSS links that you can drag into the sidebar. If not you might need to install the jetpack plugin. I’ve been learning wordpress lately so I can probably help you find it.

I think my English teacher was a trifle unconventional, but he was a great teacher for me. He used to drink bourbon from a giant bottle in his office during his free period, and those of us who had study that period (and enjoyed his favor) would join him (in the office… not in the bourbon drinking…). Very interesting guy.
